Resolutions vs. Goals

Our year is winding down and before we jump into the new one, it’s time to celebrate our wins from this year.

And many may ask – what is the difference between a resolution and a goal.  A resolution is the overarching theme or the implied direction you wish to take with your life while goals are the activities that fall within the theme or the specific steps to take you to that place.

SMART Goals

I am sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard about “SMART” Goals.  While there are plenty of variants (some of which we've included in parenthesis), SMART usually stands for:

  • S – Specific (or Significant).
  • M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
  • A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
  • R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
  • T – Time-bound (or Trackable).

Additional tips:

  • Express your goals positively and with excitement
  • Prioritize your goals.  If you have 3, which do you want to achieve 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
  • Don’t make too many at one time.  When have too many goals you are focusing on at one time, everything can seem overwhelming and like nothing is getting done.
  • Write your goals down with pen and paper.  Not notes on your phone but in writing…you have a 30% higher change of achieving them this way.
