Technology Detox

I did an un-planned technology detox this past weekend. It was divine!

I'd decided I'd had enough of social media and all that comes with it so I stayed off Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I only answered text messages that I had to.

It would have been only slightly better if I'd done this with my toes in the sand and the sun shining down on me, but I'll take what I can get right now.

What happened?

Everything was right where I left it before the weekend started! And, I managed to:

  • Finish a new diamond painting
  • Found a new author and series to binge read
  • Learned that my husband and I love "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" series on Netflix
  • Celebrate my mom's 70th birthday (or as we call it around here, Level Up Day) - we even made BLT Tacos per her request
  • Do regular housework, but I'm not really counting that

It also allowed me to approach the new work week with a fresh brain. I came up with some new ideas for some cool 'stuff' for our bodybuilding show competitors and our clients. New ideas for the charities I volunteer with. Overall, I think on Monday I was a whirlwind!

How do you do a technology detox?

  1. Turn off all those push notifications on the apps you use the most, but more specifically, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. AND YOUR EMAIL TOO!
  2. Switch your phone to black and white mode - you'll be less likely to get distracted by it.
  3. If you're going to read on your Kindle or another eReader, make sure you have the push notifications turned off on that device as well.
  4. Have some art projects around that you've been meaning to work on or even finish.
  5. Make plans to do something outdoors if you can. The rain here made that more difficult, but since it was a soft, cooling rain, we were able to open the windows for a bit.

What to Do Afterwards?

You should come out on the other side of a technology detox with a fresh mind, feeling relaxed yet focused. Make sure to schedule another technology detox to keep yourself refreshed. Also, if you're spending as much time as I do online every day, consider in investing in some TrueDark glasses. I have a pair of the Daylights and the Twilights and feel like they are a huge help on eye strain.
