Six Pounds in One Day

Yes, gaining 6 pounds on the scale in one day is possible, and it happens all the time to each and every one of us.  It recently happened to me, and I am glad it did. 

I know, you are wondering WHY?  Waiting for me to say it was all muscle – hah, I only wish I could grow muscle that fast. 

These 6 pounds were inflammation!  It’s a word we hear all the time, and sadly so many of us live with it.  Inflammation can cause so many negative side effects:

  • Weakened immune system
  • Sore/achy joints – arthritis
  • Brain fog
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Constipation
  • Increase allergy symptoms
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Bloat
  • Weight gain

The list goes on.

One of the best side effects of our 21 Day Detox that I learned was to listen to my body and its signs of inflammation.  I still enjoy a good treat meal with my family, but I can immediately tell the difference the next day in several ways.

  1. The scale – it is usually up 2-3 pounds for a day or two
  2. My face and eyes are puffy
  3. My belly aches or grumbles
  4. Brain fog

Once I am back to eating the foods that my body thrives on this all goes back down.  Well, this past week we tried out a new “gluten free” alternative grain pasta and within an hour after eating it I just felt ugh. 

When I went to bed I knew I looked puffy.  And nothing had changed in my normal diet, except for the addition of this pasta.  In the morning I woke up 6 pounds heavier, and I felt every bit of the inflammation – my hips (I have long standing arthritis due to years of competing in fitness and dance) ached in my workout and on my dog walk, my face felt super puffy, and my stomach was immediately growling for food – which isn’t normal when I eat the foods that nourish my body.

So, what did I do? 

I didn’t freak out, or over exercise, I simply made note that, ok it was chickpea pasta, was not a food that agrees with me.  I enjoyed my healthy shake for breakfast, had my fully loaded salad for lunch, my nut/fruit snack, my Asian rice bowl with grass fed beef, green beans and my cauliflower/jasmine rice mix.  I even had two of my chocolate chip cookies (recipe) with lunch and of course my two cups of coffee with almond milk.  The next day, I woke up and the weight was gone, and I felt like myself again.

The key I am sharing here is…we don’t gain 5 pounds of fat or muscle overnight.  When our weight fluctuates that much, it is due to inflammation from foods.  So, I highly encourage you to figure out what those foods are, so you can live your best life and feel amazing every day.  Good, nourishing food is something we all should allow ourselves to have.
